About

The artist

Billy Talent is a Toronto rock band formed by high school friends in Streetsville, Ontario, in 1993. Singer Ben Kowalewicz, guitarist Ian D'Sa, bassist Jon Gallant, and drummer Aaron Solowoniuk first performed as Pezz before adopting the Billy Talent name in 1999. Their self-titled 2003 album brought their mix of punk velocity, hard rock weight, tightly interlocked rhythm, and distinctive vocal tension to a broad Canadian and international audience. Billy Talent II followed in 2006 with songs including Red Flag, Fallen Leaves, and Devil in a Midnight Mass, and the band continued its run with Billy Talent III, Dead Silence, Afraid of Heights, and Crisis of Faith. Solowoniuk remained part of the group while managing multiple sclerosis, with Jordan Hastings and other touring musicians supporting drum duties when required. The band has sustained a long relationship with Warner Music Canada, extensive international touring, and a catalog that repeatedly reached the top tier of Canadian rock charts. Live at Festhalle Frankfurt arrived in 2023, a new recording of Rush's Limelight followed in 2025, and a 2026 tour marked the twentieth anniversary of Billy Talent II. CARAS recognized the group with the 2026 JUNO Humanitarian Award for its long-running community and philanthropic work. Billy Talent remains rooted in Toronto, where its direct, high-impact songwriting continues to connect melodic punk with themes of empathy, political frustration, resilience, and collective responsibility.
