The artist

Carolyn Mark is an alternative-country singer and songwriter based in Victoria, British Columbia. Raised on a dairy farm in Sicamous, she learned piano from her violinist father before joining the Victoria rock group the Vinaigrettes in 1991. After that band dissolved, Mark performed with a wide range of Canadian independent groups and formed the Corn Sisters with Neko Case. Her solo debut Party Girl arrived in 2000, followed by Terrible Hostess, The Pros and Cons of Collaboration, Just Married: An Album of Duets, Nothing Is Free, The Queen of Vancouver Island, Come! Back! Special!, and other releases. She also recorded the JUNO-nominated collaboration Let's Just Stay Here with NQ Arbuckle. Mark's writing moves between country, folk, rockabilly, and indie rock, using humour and detailed storytelling without smoothing away sadness or uncertainty. The artist-operated Bandcamp released the twelve-song album Off Season in February 2023. Current Victoria artist listings identify Mark as active and available, document her project Carolyn Mark and the New Best Friends, and record a run of Victoria-area and British Columbia performances through summer 2025.
