Cowboy Junkies is a Toronto alternative-country, blues, and folk-rock band formed in 1985 by vocalist Margo Timmins, songwriter and guitarist Michael Timmins, drummer Peter Timmins, and bassist Alan Anton. The same four musicians remain the group's core lineup. Their 1986 debut Whites Off Earth Now!! used an ambisonic microphone and a family garage to establish an unusually open, quiet recording style. The band deepened that approach on The Trinity Session, recorded in one day at Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity in 1987. Its slow tempos, room sound, and mixture of original songs with folk, blues, country, and rock material brought the group an international audience. Cowboy Junkies continued through albums including The Caution Horses, Black Eyed Man, Pale Sun, Crescent Moon, Lay It Down, Miles from Our Home, Open, One Soul Now, the four-part Nomad Series, All That Reckoning, and Such Ferocious Beauty. The band's official biography records JUNO Group of the Year nominations in 1990 and 1991, while its public contact page documents current Canadian, United States, and European representation. Such Ferocious Beauty arrived in 2023 after the band developed the songs in a converted barn north of Toronto. A 40th-anniversary tour continued through 2025, followed by active North American and United Kingdom touring in 2026. The official site also announced Open to Beauty: Best of the 21st Century for May 2026, confirming a continuing catalog and performance life for the Toronto-based quartet.
