About
The artist
Daniel Bélanger is a Montreal singer-songwriter, composer, musician, and producer whose solo catalog began with Les insomniaques s'amusent in 1992. Before that debut, he performed in the Montreal group Humphrey Salade during the 1980s. His first album established a writing style built on melodic pop, inventive arrangement, humour, tenderness, and introspection. Quatre saisons dans le désordre expanded that approach, while Rêver mieux introduced electronic textures into his francophone songwriting. Later albums moved through stripped-back experiments, alternative rock, rockabilly, instrumental film-minded composition, and polished pop, including L'échec du matériel, Nous, Chic de ville, Paloma, Travelling, and Mercure en mai. Bélanger has also written poetry and composed for film and stage. His catalog has earned numerous Félix and Juno Awards, and he received the insignia of Companion of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec in 2025. That same year, Cirque du Soleil created Les Incouchables, a large-scale tribute to his work. Current Spotify listings document performance activity into 2026, while the official site continues to present Mercure en mai as his twelfth album and provides active professional contacts. The canonical Spotify identifier matches MusicBrainz, Wikidata, Secret City-linked official materials, and the same Montreal artist. A 2022 long-form interview documents his working studio in Montreal's Petite-Patrie, and current Quebec arts, event, and official sources consistently place his professional practice in Quebec.
