About
The artist
Deantha Edmunds is an Inuk soprano, composer, writer, and mentor from Newfoundland and Labrador. Born in St. John's and raised in Corner Brook in an Inuk and Irish-Newfoundland family, she developed a classical practice shaped by family music, the history of European choral traditions in Labrador Inuit communities, and a commitment to carrying Nunatsiavut stories into contemporary performance. Her first full-length recording, Pillorikput Inuit: Inuktitut Arias for All Seasons, presented classical repertoire in Inuttitut and received East Coast Music Award recognition. The 2019 EP My Beautiful Home continued her connection to Labrador Inuit song, while Connections, recorded with the Atlantic String Quartet and released in 2022, brought together original works concerned with memory, land, water, kinship, and responsibility. Connections won MusicNL awards for Classical Album and Indigenous Artist of the Year and received an ECMA nomination. Edmunds composed the four-part song cycle Angmalukisaa, included on the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia album Alikeness in 2024. The work won the 2025 Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year, while Alikeness was nominated for Classical Album of the Year, Large Ensemble. She also received the 2025 ECMA Indigenous Artist of the Year award and MusicNL's 2025 Classical and Indigenous Artist honours. Her performance work includes collaborations with orchestras, choirs, opera companies, theatre groups, and Inuit youth, as well as appearances for the papal apology in Iqaluit and the Canadian Royal Tour welcome in St. John's. She created Irngutaq, identified by her official biography as the first opera written and composed by an Inuk, and has held artist residencies focused on reconciliation through music at universities across Canada. Edmunds was appointed to the Order of Canada, invested in 2025, and received an honorary Doctor of Music from Acadia University. In 2026, the City of St. John's named her Artist of the Year. That current civic recognition, her current professional profile, and recent reporting all confirm St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador as her present base. The canonical Spotify profile matches her official site, Apple Music, current awards, and the same Deantha Edmunds catalog.
