About

The artist

Devin Townsend is a British Columbia singer, guitarist, composer, producer, and recording artist whose catalog moves freely across progressive metal, extreme metal, ambient music, pop, country, orchestral writing, and experimental sound design. Raised in the Vancouver region, he reached an international audience in 1993 as the vocalist on Steve Vai's Sex & Religion. He then formed Strapping Young Lad and built a parallel solo career, often writing, performing, engineering, and producing most of the music himself. Ocean Machine: Biomech, Infinity, Physicist, Terria, and Accelerated Evolution established contrasting heavy, atmospheric, and melodic sides of his work. Later projects included the Devin Townsend Project, the country and ambient collaboration Casualties of Cool, the fictional Ziltoid universe, and albums such as Empath, The Puzzle, Lightwork, and PowerNerd. Townsend's recording practice is closely connected to his British Columbia home studios and a large international network of musicians, choirs, orchestras, engineers, and visual collaborators. The Moth, released in May 2026, is a twenty-four-song orchestral and choral rock opera developed over roughly a decade. It followed a full symphonic stage presentation in Groningen in March 2025 and became the twenty-ninth studio album identified by his current official biography. After announcing a break from touring in 2025, Townsend returned with the Metamorphosis solo tour for autumn 2026. A December 2025 interview records Coquitlam, British Columbia as his home, while a June 2026 interview places his current studio work in Vancouver, independently confirming the same regional base. The canonical Spotify identifier matches Apple Music, MusicBrainz, the official HevyDevy site, and the same solo catalog and project history. Exact English and French payloads were reviewed before approval, no private contact is exposed, Spotify media remains live and provider-attributed, and the profile is sourced and unclaimed.
