The artist

Eliza Niemi is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter, cellist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer. She first became known as a founding member of the Halifax experimental pop group Mauno before beginning a solo catalog with the EPs Vinegar in 2019 and Glass in 2020. Her first full-length solo album, Staying Mellow Blows, arrived in 2022 through her own Vain Mina Records and Tin Angel Records. The record paired close, conversational songwriting with cello, guitar, synths, and off-centre pop arrangements, and it appeared on the 2023 Polaris Music Prize long list. Niemi also co-wrote Jonah Yano's song always, a finalist for the 2023 SOCAN Songwriting Prize, and has contributed cello to releases by artists including Ducks Ltd. and Gift Idea. Her composition work includes music for the 2024 Canadian film Darkest Miriam. The second album Progress Bakery was released in March 2025. Written by Niemi and co-produced with Louie Short and Jeremy Ray, the fifteen-song record expands her cello-pop language through bass, acoustic guitar, keys, flute, percussion, and collaborative vocals. It was named to the 2025 Polaris Music Prize long list and supported by Canadian and European touring. A collaborative covers EP with Westelaken followed in March 2026, and current artist-controlled listings show further Canadian and U.S. dates.
