About

The artist

Florent Vollant is an Innu singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer, and mentor based in Maliotenam, east of Sept-Îles on Quebec's North Shore. Born in Labrador in 1959 and raised in Maliotenam, he helped establish the Innu Nikamu festival in the 1980s before forming Kashtin with Claude McKenzie. The duo's three albums brought Innu-language folk-rock to audiences across Canada and internationally between 1989 and 1995. Vollant then built a solo catalog rooted in Innu-aimun, acoustic songwriting, country-folk, rock, and community memory. His albums include Nipaiamianan, Katak, Eku Mamu, Puamuna, Mishta Meshkenu, and Tshitatau. He founded Studio Makusham in Maliotenam in 1997, creating a recording and mentorship space for Indigenous musicians. Tshitatau was developed in that studio with longtime collaborator André Lachance and released in March 2024 through Makusham Musique. The exact Spotify identity currently exposes two distinct primary album containers, Eku Mamu and Tshitatau, dated from April 2009 through March 2024; the wider six-album solo history is documented by his official site and award institutions. Vollant received the 2021 Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in popular music, won the 2019 Félix for Indigenous Artist of the Year, and was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in November 2025. Current official artist activity, 2025 coverage of work with his Maliotenam circle, and professional sources centred on Studio Makusham independently support Maliotenam as his present base. English and French copy and translation provenance were reviewed together, Spotify media is rendered with provider attribution, professional inquiries are routed through the official website, and no direct personal or team contact details are republished.
