About

The artist

François Bourassa is a Montreal jazz pianist, composer, and improviser whose ensembles have been part of Quebec's jazz landscape since the 1980s. His first trio won the Montreal International Jazz Festival's new-talent competition in 1985, beginning a touring career across Europe, Asia, and North America. Saxophonist and flutist André Leroux joined the group in 1996, expanding it into the François Bourassa Quartet. Bourassa's writing balances contemporary jazz, free improvisation, chamber-like interplay, and a lyrical approach to silence and space. His recorded work includes Indefinite Time, the JUNO-winning Live, Number 9, the solo piano album L'impact du silence, and the quartet's live recording Swirl. The official 2026 biography counts eleven albums of original music and marks the quartet's 30th anniversary with Canadian dates in June and July 2026 and a European tour in November. His honours include the 1985 festival competition, a JUNO Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year, the 2005 Félix for Jazz Album of the Year for Indefinite Time, and the 2007 Oscar Peterson Award from the Montreal International Jazz Festival. The exact Spotify identity contains 13 distinct primary release containers from February 2014 through March 2025: nine albums and four singles. Les Chemins du Concerto is the newest matching release; the official site and Apple Music corroborate the identity, Montreal geography, and current catalogue. Some quartet and trio releases appear under separate provider identities and are not merged into this exact-profile count. English and French copy and translation provenance were reviewed together, Spotify media is rendered with provider attribution, professional inquiries are directed to the official website, and no direct contact details are republished.
