About

The artist

Gary Kulesha is a Toronto composer, conductor, pianist, and educator whose first professional compositions date from age fifteen. Early works including String Trio, Divertimento for Brass Quintet No. 1, and Sonata for Horn, Tuba, and Piano remain in performance and recording circulation. He worked as a composer and arranger with Canadian Brass, became artistic director of The Composers' Orchestra in 1987, and in 1988 became the first composer appointed through the Canada Council's newly created Canadian composer-in-residence program at the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. He later served as composer in residence at the Canadian Opera Company, where Red Emma premiered in 1995, and as composer advisor to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1995 through June 2022. That role included composition, conducting, repertoire advice, reading sessions, mentorship, and the creation of major new-music initiatives. Kulesha joined the full-time University of Toronto Faculty of Music in 2000. The university's May 2026 staff listing identifies him as composition subdivisional coordinator and professor, teaching stream, confirming current Toronto activity. His official site documents an extensive catalog that includes Celebration Overture, Angels, operas, concertos, chamber music, and four symphonies. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in December 2023. Other honours include the 1986 PRO Canada Composer of the Year award, two Juno nominations, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra prize for the best Canadian orchestral composition of the 1990s, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra Composer Award. His Fourth Symphony premiered with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2023, and the exact Spotify identity contains three primary album containers from April 2012 through May 2024, all classified as albums by the provider. That narrow DSP count reflects only releases attached to the exact profile and is not presented as a complete works catalog. Apple Music identifies the exact artist with Toronto. The public profile directs professional and score inquiries to Kulesha's official website and University of Toronto profile without republishing direct contact information. English and French copy and translation provenance were reviewed together, and Spotify media is rendered with provider attribution.
