The artist

Helena Deland is a singer-songwriter and musician based in Montréal, Quebec. Born in Vancouver and raised in Quebec City, she entered the Montréal independent music community before releasing the Drawing Room EP in 2016. The four-part Altogether Unaccompanied series followed in 2018, then her debut album Someone New arrived through Luminelle Recordings in 2020. Its subtle guitar writing, layered textures, and reflections on identity earned the album a place on the 2021 Polaris Music Prize long list. Deland continued her solo work with Swimmer, the claire rousay collaboration Deceiver, and her second album Goodnight Summerland in 2023. The album shifted toward spare indie folk and was named to the 2024 Polaris long list. She also records with Montréal multi-instrumentalist Ouri as Hildegard. Their collaborative albums Hildegard and Jour 1596 expand Deland's work into improvisation and experimental electronic music, with Jour 1596 appearing on the 2025 Polaris long list. In February 2025, Deland returned to her open-ended EP sequence with Altogether Unaccompanied, Vol. V and announced intimate solo performances with more new music in development. Her artist-controlled Bandcamp page currently identifies Montréal, Quebec, while Chivi Chivi's current artist profile documents the 2025 release, touring activity, collaborations, management, press, and booking team.
