About
The artist
Martha and the Muffins are a Toronto new wave and art-pop band formed in 1977. The original group emerged from the Ontario College of Art community with Martha Johnson on vocals and keyboards, Mark Gane on guitar, Carl Finkle on bass, Tim Gane on drums, Martha Ladly on keyboards and trombone, and Andy Haas on saxophone. Their 1980 debut album Metro Music introduced Echo Beach, written by Gane. The song became a top-ten hit in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, won the 1981 Juno Award for Single of the Year, and entered the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023. The group followed with Trance and Dance and This Is The Ice Age before Johnson and Gane continued with changing collaborators and the shortened M + M name. Their 1980s catalogue includes Danseparc, Mystery Walk, and The World Is a Ball, while later work includes Modern Lullaby, Delicate, Where Blue Meets Green, and Marthology: The In and Outtakes. Johnson and Gane are also documented record producers. AllMusic credits both as producers and mixers on Then Again: A Retrospective, and production references identify them with Daniel Lanois on Danseparc and Mystery Walk. The exact Spotify identity 5nWbdgU2jcFSbrPV7EAoLK contains thirteen distinct principal album and single containers available in Canada: six albums and seven singles according to Spotify's current classifications. They span Metro Music in 1980 through For What It's Worth in January 2024. This provider-visible summary includes anniversary remix and retrospective containers and is not presented as a complete career discography. The catalogue is divided across two collision-free Apple Music identities: legacy catalogue artist 14570579 and current catalogue artist 1358220210. Together they independently match the Toronto group, alternate naming, membership, and release history. In April 2024, Martha Johnson and Mark Gane released Slow Emotion with Parkinson Canada and discussed the song from their Toronto home. Parkinson Canada later documented the recording at their home studio and the song's Toronto launch. A current official band site, updated in 2025, connects the band identity to official channels and to Gane's continuing music work. A 2025 Toronto profile also documents Gane's ongoing composition and solo recording activity. These current records establish an active Toronto and Ontario professional base for the core duo. The official site exposes a direct email route, but MusicList does not reproduce it and records no separate safe public professional contact path. Spotify media is displayed only through the provider-attributed live route with a monogram fallback.
