About

The artist

METZ is a noise rock trio professionally based in Toronto, Ontario. The current artist-controlled Bandcamp identifies Toronto and lists Alex Edkins on guitar and vocals, Hayden Menzies on drums, and Chris Slorach on bass. MusicBrainz independently records the same Toronto, Ontario identity, while a May 2026 Magnet interview calls METZ a Toronto trio and confirms that the group remains on hiatus. The musicians formed METZ in the late 2000s and established the project within Toronto's punk and independent music community. Their self-titled album arrived in 2012, followed by II in 2015, Strange Peace in 2017, Atlas Vending in 2020, and Up on Gravity Hill in 2024. The Sub Pop biography for Up on Gravity Hill presents the record as a collective effort by the long-standing trio, with engineer Seth Manchester and guest contributions from Owen Pallett and Amber Webber. The album continued the group's movement from tightly compressed noise punk toward more spacious and melodic arrangements. METZ announced an indefinite hiatus after its 2024 touring cycle in order to focus on other work and family life. A one-off reunion performance followed in April 2025, but current 2026 reporting still describes the band as on hiatus, and the official Sub Pop tour page lists no upcoming dates. The exact Spotify identity 18TNVFTJ6WfeicsMRrdJHI initially exposed 29 principal album and single containers in the Canadian market. One 2021 item, Duakan Hati, belongs to an unrelated namesake and carries a conflicting Vortumusik identity, so MusicList excludes it from METZ's catalog. The collision-free snapshot contains 28 containers from October 2012 through April 12, 2024: eight albums and 20 singles. Several single containers contain multiple tracks, and the album total includes the 2022 deluxe edition of METZ. Representative releases are Up on Gravity Hill, Atlas Vending, Strange Peace, II, and METZ. Apple Music artist 2771256, MusicBrainz artist 449c400c-8312-4c1d-bed8-c8d774090759, and Wikidata Q11343770 independently reconcile to the same Canadian trio. The 2012 METZ album was shortlisted for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize, and II appeared on the 2015 Polaris long list. No production role is inferred for the band because the reviewed sources credit external engineers and do not establish METZ itself as a producer entity.
