The artist

Founded in 1997 by artistic director Richard Gillis and saxophonist Sasha Boychouk, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is a professional big band rooted in Winnipeg. Its mandate combines performance, composition, recording, education, inclusion, and community building. The orchestra presents a regular concert series, commissions Canadian and Manitoban composers, collaborates with guest artists, and supports school and honour-band programs. Its catalog includes Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, Suite Messiah, Suite 150, Twisting Ways, Voices: A Musical Heritage, East Meets West: Connections, and the 2026 release Forgotten Stories Suite. East Meets West: Connections won the 2025 JUNO Award for Jazz Album of the Year (Group) and the Western Canadian Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year.
