The Gauntlet is the University of Calgary’s independent student-run newspaper, with current Calgary festival coverage, concert reviews and artist interviews.
The Gauntlet is the University of Calgary’s independent, student-run newspaper in Calgary, operating since 1960. It publishes campus and city reporting online and in print through the Gauntlet Publications Society. Its current Arts & Culture desk covers the University of Calgary community and Calgary’s wider music and arts scene. A July 24, 2026 concert report reviews Canadian band The Beaches at the Calgary Stampede, while June coverage follows five days of Sled Island performances spanning local and Canadian indie rock, punk, emo, experimental, industrial, electronic and hip-hop artists. A May interview with Sled Island’s executive and artistic director examines the festival’s underground and alternative-music mandate, accessibility and relationship to Calgary’s arts community. The current volunteer page invites contributors to complete an orientation, claim newsroom assignments and pitch their own stories. Separately, the current Story Pitches guide accepts story tips from any sender through the relevant section editor, asks for concise details and contact information, and retains editorial discretion. The contact page designates the Arts & Research role inbox for that section. MusicList represents this as a direct no-fee story-pitch route, not as guaranteed coverage, an artist-promotion service or a freelance-content channel. Named staff contacts, unrelated role inboxes, volunteer forms, phone numbers and street-address details are excluded.
