Provenance & Context

The Story of the Release

Queen & Judgement is the fourth studio album by Toronto Afro-Cuban post-rock ensemble Battle of Santiago, released on April 24, 2020 through Made With Pencil Crayons. Conceived and written between Toronto and Havana, Cuba, the seven-track project deepens the band's synthesis of sacred Yoruba ceremonial drumming, Santería spiritual themes, and expansive art-rock architecture. Stripping back to a focused quintet anchored by bandleader Michael Owen on bass and production, alongside master conguero Reimundo Sosa, guitarist Lyle Crilly, saxophonist Michael Butler, and guest contributions from OKAN's Magdelys Savigne and Elizabeth Rodriguez, the album garnered critical acclaim for its hypnotic groove and seamless cross-cultural dialogue.

Canadian Press & Critical Reception

Sounds and Colours2020-04
"There is never a dull moment on Queen & Judgement, a brief but compelling release... The final track, 'El Sol', as potent as the six that precede it, leaves an impression of a band at the top of their game."
