About
The artist
Glenn Buhr is a Winnipeg composer and multi-instrumental performer whose catalog joins contemporary classical writing with jazz, rock, song, improvisation, theatre, film, and dance. His official works list begins with compositions from 1977 and documents orchestral, chamber, choral, solo, stage, and screen projects. Toronto and Montréal orchestras championed his music in the 1980s, and he later served as composer-in-residence with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and helped establish its New Music Festival with conductor Bramwell Tovey. Works including Beren & Luthien, winter poems, Piano Concerto no. 2, Red Sea (Song of the Earth), several symphonies, and the ballet Beauty and the Beast show the breadth of his concert practice. Buhr also performs and records through the Buhr Quartet, the Button Factory Band, and the Broken Songs Band, and he collaborates frequently with writer and vocalist Margaret Sweatman. Their song When Wintertime, from the film Seven Times Lucky, received a Genie Award. DreamPlay currently presents Buhr as a resident artist and documents a 2026 Winnipeg performance series at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, including concerts with the DreamPlay Band, the Buhr Quartet, and the Broken Songs Band. The Canadian Music Centre also lists his Violoncello Concerto no. 2 as Manitoba's entry among the 2025 Western Canadian Music Award nominees for Classical Composer of the Year. Those current sources support Winnipeg, Manitoba as his public professional base. His exact Spotify identity contains 26 distinct primary album and single containers from January 1999 through June 2026: ten albums and 16 provider-classified singles. Several multi-track works retain Spotify's single classification rather than being silently converted. Recent releases through DreamPlay Records include Violoncello Concerti 1 & 2, Glenn Buhr Songbook, Vol. 1, Rebels Blues, Subversive Songs, and Cantilena.
