The artist

KUNÉ is an eleven-member global music ensemble based in Toronto. The project began at the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2016, when musicians from newcomer communities and one Métis Canadian artist were brought together to build an ensemble around collaboration rather than a single national tradition. Its current lineup combines voices with instruments including tar, dizi, oud, lyra, clarinet, saxophone, violin, viola, bass, drums, cajón, n’goni, flutes, and percussion. The group first recorded as KUNÉ for Canada’s Global Orchestra, a fourteen-track album released in April 2018 by the Royal Conservatory under exclusive licence to Universal Music Canada. KUNÉ became an independent musicians’ collective and not-for-profit organization in 2021, expanding its work into education and community programs for immigrant musicians. Universal Echoes followed through Lulaworld Records in April 2023. Its twelve collaboratively composed pieces use water, fire, wind, earth, migration, and environmental responsibility as connecting ideas. The album was recorded in Toronto, mixed by Tyler Emond and Demetrios Petsalakis, and mastered by Justin Gray. Universal Echoes received the Oliver Schroer Pushing the Boundaries Award at the 2024 Canadian Folk Music Awards.
