The artist
Montuno West is a cross-regional Canadian ensemble centred in Calgary and Edmonton, with members also based in Vancouver. The group brings together Afro-Cuban folklore, Batá drumming, Latin jazz, global traditions, and contemporary improvisation. Its lineup features Israel ‘Toto’ Berriel, Chris Andrew, Rubim de Toledo, Raul Tabera, and Luis ‘El Pana’ Tovar, reflecting Cuban, Venezuelan, Brazilian, and Canadian perspectives. Montuno West released Tocar Tambor in 2018 and Raíces in 2024. The latter explored ancestry and cultural memory, charted nationally, and supported festival appearances across Canada. The ensemble received Western Canadian Music Award nominations for Jazz Artist of the Year in 2025 and Global Artist of the Year in 2026.
