About
The artist
Brazilian-Canadian bassist and composer Rubim de Toledo began his professional career in Edmonton at seventeen and has grown into an influential bandleader, sideman, producer, and educator. His solo work blends jazz improvisation with Brazilian, Cuban, Caribbean, African, funk, and contemporary influences across seven full-length albums, including The Dig and The Drip. He is a founding member of Montuno West, Bomba, and Maracujah and has served as a musical director for Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. De Toledo won Western Canadian Music Awards for Jazz Artist of the Year in 2018 and Instrumental Artist of the Year in 2021, earned another instrumental nomination in 2025, and continued releasing collaborative music and touring internationally in 2026.
