Provenance & Context

The Story of the Release

Science-Fiction Cumbia Volume 1: Arizona is an adventurous, genre-bending concept album by Montreal-born, Toronto-based guitarist and composer Eric St-Laurent. Fusing traditional Colombian cumbia, chicha, and Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz improvisation and electronic textures, the seven-track record creates a playful alternate-history narrative of space-traveling sound engineers jamming with 19th-century dance ensembles. Recorded in Toronto with a powerhouse quintet, the album features electric bassist Calvin Beale, vocalist and keyboardist Irene Torres, percussionists Chendy León and Luisito Orbegoso, and sound engineer Tyler Emond.
